Lisa Young: Walk Forward
Lisa Young: Walk Forward comprises a suite of hand embroidered textile works produced over a two-year period that traverse new terrain; a new material vocabulary and a rich colour palette reminiscent of modernist painting.
Young's eclectic practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing and painting, and derives from her interest in the decorative arts, architecture and interior display. For over two decades, hybrid domestic rooms and sculptural forms that reference interiors and furniture have featured in her work.
In Walk Forward Young's core preoccupations with form and structure were evident in the brightly-hued hand stitched works, in which urban and industrial structures and modernist forms are implicit. The process of making these works is a concise meditation on the artist's ongoing preoccupations with ambitious form and sculptural content. The exhibition title alluded to the artist's personal engagement with the problematics of maintaining a large-scale sculptural practice, including logistical, ethical, financial and physical concerns. It is also, of course, a directive to self.
