Lisa Young: Black & Gold
Lisa Young: Black & Gold is the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery following Big World (2011), Cabriole Leg (2012) and Curveball (with Louise Paramor) (2014). For Black & Gold Young’s major sculptural work Goldrush — conceived for and first presented as part of SPRING1883 at The Hotel Windsor (2016) — is presented alongside new sculptural works and a suite of hand-coloured digital prints.
Lisa Young’s eclectic practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing and painting, and derives from her interest in the decorative arts, architecture and interior display. Black & Gold continues Young’s interest in the intersections and psychological interplays between the public and private, and sees the artist revisit earlier concerns and installations involving domestic rooms, interiors and furniture. The artist’s sculptural forms create a visual conversation between both the architectures and the cultural aspirations of the spaces in which they are sited. With Goldrush each mirrored surface reflects and refracts the elements of the host environment: flooring, lights, ceiling and other details are fragmented and multiplied and a collaged, alternative space is created.
